Description

This project aims to provide a conception of teaching that clarifies the responsibilities of the individual practitioner working in the public school system. It will also contribute to the collective good of an improved profession as a whole, as teaching constitutes what Seumas Miller (2015) calls a ‘joint epistemic action’ in which individual teachers perform interdependent actions in order to realize common epistemic goals. A clearer sense of what public school teaching is will help clarify what teachers ought to be accountable for, what changes to the education system ought to be prioritized, which of the difficult working conditions are meaningful and valuable to entertain, and which are not.
