Age Group: Elementary
Expected Hours: Monday to Friday 8-3, flexible preparation time before May, weekend for community booth
Number of Placements: 2
Preferred Candidate Stream: Teaching children

Position Description

The goal for the CFE is to expand the reach of Let’s Talk Science (LTS) into rural, indigenous and underserved communities in BC through a “guest speaker approach” to teaching by conducting hands-on STEM classroom workshop visits.

The teacher candidates will be provided with partner school contacts in a rural setting in BC (Nisga’a Nation, Prince Rupert). Organization of the trip begins in February and continues until May. The first week of May will be used for trip preparation, travel and outreach will occur in week two, and week three will be used for reporting, restocking and outreach delivery in the Kelowna area. The CFE candidates are required to deliver 2-3 workshops per day for one week, in addition to holding booth events in the communities if available. LTS provides contacts and workshops, helps with scheduling and covers all associated travel costs (airfare, car rental, accommodation, meals, supplies). All school visits are free for the participating educators.

As this placement is located in a remote area with limited cell phone service, two CFE students will travel and conduct outreach together. Ideally hotel rooms will be shared.

Good communication, organizational, and time management skills are required as the teacher candidates will be in a fulltime practicum when most of the planning needs to occur.

Organization Information

Let’s Talk Science is a national charitable organization committed to preparing youth for evolving career and citizenship demands in a rapidly changing world. Our goal is to positively impact every child in Canada, from early years through secondary school. We do this primarily by providing programs and resources for educators that help them improve youth education and engagement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Our robust suite of programming is available in English and French at no cost to schools, early years centres, community organizations and parents/caregivers. We also support a diverse network of volunteers, the majority of which are postsecondary students who build career-readiness skills themselves by delivering and participating in Let’s Talk Science programming.
