Lead Well: Whole School Wellbeing

The Whole School Wellbeing Research Project is dedicated to fostering sustainable wellbeing in school communities. Led by Dr. Sabre Cherkowski, Professor, this project aims to examine thriving learning environments where students, educators, and staff flourish together.

Wellbeing is not a “one-size-fits-all” concept and so this research involves diverse examples of school organization from community-responsive approaches. It examines wellbeing from an organisational perspective, paying attention to leadership and professional learning from the perspective of work cultures, organisational systems, as well as team and individual processes for promoting and sustaining flourishing in schools. Schools in Canada and the USA that exemplify community-responsive school design serve as case-studies where all school community members share their experiences. By collecting stories and insights directly from students, parents, teachers, and staff, the unique needs and strengths of each school community can be understood and examined. Visit the project website for resources that provide evidence-based insights and practical strategies for fostering wellbeing and flourishing in educational settings.

The project will conduct research for the next three years, hosting forums and engaging with school communities to understand and promote wellbeing. If your school integrates wellbeing and would like to collaborate on this research, reach out to the research team at lead.well@ubc.ca.

This project is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and UBC Principal’s Research Chair in Leadership, Learning, and Wellbeing.
