Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP)

Bachelor of Education Program Renewal UPDATE

The Faculty of Education has decided to critically review the Bachelor of Education program, addressing changes in the B.C. curriculum and feedback from external stakeholders, literature, and recent research.

Pending British Columbia Teachers Council approvals, the renewed Bachelor of Education program will begin in September 2017.

The renewed Bachelor of Education program will offer students a combined program of Elementary Teacher Education (ETEP) and Secondary Teacher Education (STEP), into one 16-month program. This generalist approach to teaching more closely aligns to 21st- century teaching environments and the new BC curriculum.

Because the renewed program will include both STEP and ETEP programs, the decision has been made to suspend the Secondary Teacher Education Program for the 2017 academic year,  this was approved by UBC Okanagan Senate on March 31, 2016.

In an effort to support students, admission requirements will stay the same for the 2017 academic year.

Current or prospective students interested in the changes should contact the Faculty of Education advisors for more information at 250.807.9176 or email:

We would like to thank students and members of the community for their continued input and engagement with the Faculty of Education.

NOTE:  The Bachelor or Education is currently under review. Changes are expected to be implemented in the upcoming and subsequent academic years. Please contact the Faculty of Education for more information.

The STEP is an innovative program offering a balance of content, conceptual studies, and practical experiences in the schools. The program provides a strong theoretical base and specialized methodological content with an emphasis on integration of knowledge. Teacher candidates enjoy opportunities for choice of study and independent research in a Guided Reflective Inquiry Project (GRIP) that serves as a final project for this degree program. Teacher candidates will complete their practice teaching in schools throughout the Okanagan region.

This 12-Month program has an annual intake in July and leads to teacher certification in British Columbia.

The following specialty areas are offered in the Secondary Teacher Education Program:

  • French
  • Humanities
  • Mathematics Science
  • Middle School
  • Physical Education
  • Trades Technology
  • The STEP French, Humanities (academic preparation in both English and Social Studies), Math-Science, Middle School, and Physical Education Education specialties meet the requirements of the Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) for a Professional Teaching Certificate and a Bachelor of Education degree.

STEP Trades Technology teacher candidates are recommended for either a Conditional Teaching Certificate or a Professional Teaching Certificate.

STEP Trade Technology teacher candidates seeking to complete requirements for their B.Ed. degree will be required to complete additional approved credits in  Arts/Science/Fine Arts coursework.
