ECED 440: Play and Early Childhood Education

July 2 – August 9

Format: Online – asynchronous


This course examines the key issues, practices, philosophies, and research findings that explore childhood play as it is integrated into formal learning.

The purposes of this course are to:

  1. examine strategies for identifying various types of play.
  2. apply Ethical Conduct in regards to the play of young children.
  3. analyze, document and evaluate elements of play and its effect on the development of the child.
  4. explore research related to play and its impact on children.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
understand the value of play in facilitating active learning for young children
types of social play
explain principles of developmentally appropriate practice in preschool
settings
plan and implement fine motor, sand/water and art activities for young children
implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate play experiences
for a child centered curriculum
read, comprehend, and integrate developmental profiles and key
experiences into appropriate play activities
appreciating the value of developmentally appropriate play to early
childhood education

Dr. Stephen Berg

Dr. Stephen Berg is an Associate Professor in the Okanagan School of Education where he teaches courses in a number of areas including Physical Education and Health Education. Stephen has teaching experience in the K-12 and post-secondary levels in British Columbia, Alberta, and Nova Scotia and has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching.

To register for a course, you will first need to submit an online application via Education Planner BC portal

  • Sign up for your EducationPlannerBC Account and follow the instructions to complete your applicant profile.
  • Select University of British Columbia as the institution you want to apply to
  • Select the upcoming Winter Session: September – December
  • Select “Access Studies”
  • Under “Access Studies” section, indicate that your program of interest is the Okanagan School of Education’s Summer Institute in Education Summer Session May – August.
  • Once all necessary fields are filled in, click the “Save” button at the bottom of the page.
  • You will be prompted to review your EPBC application and pay an application fee.

Once you have paid the application fee, email nondegree.ok@ubc.ca if you want UBC to process it quicker. If not, it will take three to five business days for UBC to admit you.
