Description

There is an abundance of literature on teacher leadership and how it is vital for teacher leaders to participate in, and even lead instruction reform in schools. However, in Nigeria, the concept of teacher leadership is construed very narrowly and often limited to teachers appointed to assist in, or informally participate in, school administration. This project focuses on the unique cultural and socio-economic challenges faced by teacher leaders interested in supporting or leading changes in instructional practices in Nigeria, a country in sub-Saharan West Africa. It examines barriers to instructional change in K-12 education in Nigeria, some shared by schools in all jurisdictions and some uniquely Nigerian. It proffers arguments in favour of instructional change and demonstrates how teacher-leaders in Nigeria can succeed in instituting innovative instructional change despite challenges.
