EDST 498S: Designing Inquiry Driven Learning Experiences for Beginning Teachers

July 2 – July 19 (Tuesday TO friday)   |   1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Format: Online – synchronous


This course is designed for beginning teachers seeking to embrace inquiry-driven pedagogical approaches in their classrooms. It will explore theory-practice connections and support pre-service and new teachers in developing engaging and ‘living’ learning experiences for their students from kindergarten to grade 12, placing a strong emphasis on fostering learner agency and curiosity. Designing learning experiences that bring to life BC’s core competencies of communication, critical and creative thinking, personal and social responsibility.

By the end of the course, students will be able to/have a deeper understanding of:

Inquiry-Based Learning:

  • Define inquiry-based learning and its benefits.
  • Explore various philosophical approaches to inquiry-driven education.

Bridging Grades and Subjects:

  • Identify ways to integrate inquiry across different grades and subjects.
  • Develop interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning.

Fostering Curiosity:

  • Recognize and leverage students’ natural curiosities.
  • Develop strategies for sparking and sustaining student inquiry.

BC’s Core Competencies Integration:

  • Explore how communication, critical and creative thinking, and personal and social responsibility can be embedded into (are the foundational basis for) inquiry-based activities.

Engaging with Scholarship and Practical Resources:

  • Critically examine research and literature on inquiry-based learning.
  • Explore practical resources, lesson plans, and examples.

Developing an Inquiry Language:

  • Help teachers articulate the principles and language of inquiry.
  • Encourage reflection on their own teaching practices.

Communication and Engagement:

  • Teach teachers how to communicate their inquiry-based approach effectively with parents and caretakers.
  • Discuss strategies for building trust within the school community.

Building a Concrete Framework:

  • Assist teachers in creating a tangible framework for inquiry-based learning.
  • Support them to develop specific learning units or lessons ahead of their Fall internship

Kyle Hamilton

Kyle Hamilton is a passionate educator having taught at the middle, secondary and post-secondary levels. He values complex teaching and learning environments that seek to grapple with human well-being, agency, diverse knowledges, praxis, subjective reconstruction, and democratization. His masters work explored the philosophy of cosmopolitanism in relation to K-12 settings and his PhD work focuses on foregrounding K-12 classrooms and schools as sites for developing more democratic and more just societies. In his spare time, he loves to mountain bike, ski, hike, play ice hockey, and travel.

To register for a course, you will first need to submit an online application via Education Planner BC portal

  • Sign up for your EducationPlannerBC Account and follow the instructions to complete your applicant profile.
  • Select University of British Columbia as the institution you want to apply to
  • Select the upcoming Winter Session: September – December
  • Select “Access Studies”
  • Under “Access Studies” section, indicate that your program of interest is the Okanagan School of Education’s Summer Institute in Education Summer Session May – August.
  • Once all necessary fields are filled in, click the “Save” button at the bottom of the page.
  • You will be prompted to review your EPBC application and pay an application fee.

Once you have paid the application fee, email nondegree.ok@ubc.ca if you want UBC to process it quicker. If not, it will take three to five business days for UBC to admit you.
