EDST 498T: AI for Educators: Transforming Teaching and Learning

July 23 – August 9 (Tuesday to friday )

Format: Online, asynchronous

In K-12 education, both teachers and students are increasingly adopting generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), integrating it into instructional practices and classroom learning in a multitude of ways. This course aims to explore the significance of generative AI and how it is transforming teaching and learning. In this course, educators will explore the knowledge and skills to confidently integrate AI into their teaching practice. Through engaging with educational research, real-world examples, and interactive sessions with educators and students, participants will gain insights into the transformative power of AI in K-12 education and explore its applications within the context of planning, instruction, and assessment.

Additionally, participants will learn and practice specific strategies for designing assignments and learning activities that incorporate and leverage generative AI to enhance learning while preserving connection in the classroom.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • describe, evaluate, and communicate the impacts of educational research on our understanding of AI ethics and classroom applications, to inform K-12 teaching practices.
  • examine the impact of AI on student engagement and learning outcomes
  • distinguish between effective and ineffective uses of AI in education.
  • evaluate and apply ethical considerations when implementing AI in the classroom.
  • explain the implications of AI on teaching methodologies and student learning.
  • develop strategies to integrate AI into classroom activities that align with curricular goals.
  • identify a range of AI tools for use in educational contexts.

Elizabeth Saville

Elizabeth Saville is a PhD candidate at UBC, where she is exploring how diverse groups of students build social and disciplinary identities in STEM through their classroom experiences. Drawing from over 20 years as a secondary STEM teacher in BC and Ontario, she now works as a teacher educator, an educational consultant, a project coordinator for the Canadian Consortium of Science Equity Scholars and as an educational researcher. Over the past year, Elizabeth has been actively discussing the implications of Generative AI with elementary and secondary educators and integrating AI into her educational practice. Her aim is to provide practical and research-based insights to educators – both challenges and successes – on the use of AI in teaching and learning that can support and advance daily teaching practices.
