Research and Teaching Areas
BackgroundDr. Stephen Berg is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus where he teaches courses in a number of areas including Physical Education and Health Education. Stephen has teaching experience in the K-12 and post-secondary levels in British Columbia, Alberta, and Nova Scotia and has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching.
Research InterestsDr. Berg’s research focus is on children’s wellbeing. Currently, he is investigating children’s engagement in health-promoting schools, a national program exploring the importance of physical activity, nutrition, and emotional wellbeing, and an integrated psycho-social and sport program targeting at-risk girls. Further, Stephen is an academic executive team member for the Sustainable Childhood Obesity Prevention through Community Engagement (SCOPE) program.
Scholarly Contributions & Professional DevelopmentProfessionally, Dr. Berg is the co-author of three books in the areas of Health Education and Physical Education. As well, he revised the NGO Right to Play’s Abilities First teacher trainer manual, co-authored the elementary school cycling program Guide to Ride for Grades 4-6 and updated Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Resource Guides and workshops for Action Schools! BC. Stephen has presented at numerous conferences at the international, national, and provincial levels and has been an invited speaker by the University of Maribor, Slovenia and the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
At UBC's Okanagan campus, Dr. Berg serves on the Senate Curriculum Committee and is a member of the Community of Scholar Practitioners within the Faculty of Education. He is a reviewer for several journals, notably the Revue phénEPS-PHEnex Journal and Canadian Journal of Education.
Beyond academia, Stephen is the father of three very active children, is a volunteer firefighter with the City of Kelowna, and performs annually with his daughters in the Canadian School of Ballet’s the Nutcracker.
