EDST 498E (3): Reflective Autobiography: A teaching/teacher’s way of being for productively navigating school landscapes

July 4 – July 21 (Tuesday to friday) 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Format: Online

This course invites educators (inservice, preservice, and future) to undertake an autobiographical examination of their education experiences. Through Pinar’s notion of the Currere Method, students are positioned to reflect on educational experiences that shape an individual’s self-understanding in relation to teaching practices and curriculum.  By focusing on autobiography as a method for personal development, this summer course intends to help participants surface new points of view on school, schooling, and teaching. Your theorizing voice will be mobilized for engaged pedagogical action—articulating what you are doing and why, challenging your values, introspectively exploring your assumptions and beliefs, and seeking ways to further all learners and learning. This course starts as a seminar and moves into a workshop model where we will regularly write and then  give and get feedback on each other’s written work. We will grow together; learning from ourselves and those in our class community. You will leave with a Currere autobiographical paper by the end of the two weeks.

After completing this seminar, students should be able to:

  • engage in collaborative group work and provide effective feedback on peer autobiographical writing
  • better understand the issues on the education landscape
  • demonstrate  ability to use the reflective steps of the Currere method to explore personal experiences of the education landscape
  • gain an awareness of policies, systemic structures, and discourses on the education landscape and their impact
  • demonstrate engagement with class concepts in both in-class discussions and in written assignments
  • critically reflect on experiences, beliefs, assumptions, and integrate insights into a Currere autobiographical reflection narrative paper
