EDST 498D: Digital Literacy
July 4 – 21 (Tuesday TO friday) | 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Format: Online
Throughout this course students will discuss and unpack what it means to be digitally literate for our student. Are students considered literate if they graduate but don’t have the computer skills necessary to perform after high school? At what age do these skills begin? Students will look at a scope and sequence as well as recent research surrounding the digital landscape as well as those most affected by inequities in our system and how we might look to close the gap.
After completing this course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of what digital literacy is
- develop a scope and sequence of digital literacy skills for students of all ages
- design lesson plans for students to develop these skills in an engaging way
- look at the equity side of digital literacy and how we can close the gaps in new and innovative ways
Tess Perry
Tess Perry is a teacher in Kelowna, BC who works alongside the learning technology department and the instructional leadership team. She has been teaching for 9 years and got her Master’s degree from the University of British Columbia Okanagan in 2019. Alongside Dr. Stephen Berg, she published a journal article in the Journal of Outdoor Adventure and Education in 2020.
Tess likes to lead by example and live an active lifestyle to find balance in a digital world. Having access to technology in classrooms can make teaching different than before but not always in a bad way. There is so much to learn when it comes to technology as it is ever changing, though the pedagogies remain important to stay constant. This is her first course at the Summer Institute and she is excited to learn from and connect with all the educators this Summer!
