EDST 498N: Developing Leadership Capacity in the Classroom
July 25 – August 11 (Tuesday to Friday) | 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Format: In-Person
The purpose of this course is to provide students with opportunities to explore leadership styles and better understand established research principles that support successful leadership in organizations.

Topic 5: Leading in Crisis Situations

By the end of this course, students will:
- understand basic concepts of leadership.
- understand leadership and coaching styles for high level performance.

Del Sheehan
Dr. Sheehan has been involved in teaching and educational administration for close to thirty years within college and public education contexts throughout Alberta and British Columbia. His academic qualifications include a B.Ed Degree (English/Physical Education) through the University of Alberta, a M.Ed Degree through the University of Calgary (Curriculum, Teaching, & Learning), and an Ed.D (Educational Leadership). He is a life-long learner and still works full time as Gr. 7 generalist at St. Joseph Elementary School in Kelowna. He loves the Okanagan and the many opportunities to enjoy nature, athletic activities, and sunshine. He looks forward to meeting students and staff at UBC-Okanagan.

Please note, this course requires third-year standing or above. Those who do not meet the requirements will be dropped from the course.

To register for a course, you will first need to submit an online application via Education Planner BC portal.
- Sign up for your EducationPlannerBC Account and follow the instructions to complete your applicant profile.
- Select University of British Columbia as the institution you want to apply to
- Select the upcoming Winter Session: September – December
- Select “Access Studies”
- Under “Access Studies” section, indicate that your program of interest is the Okanagan School of Education’s Summer Institute in Education Summer Session May – August.
- Once all necessary fields are filled in, click the “Save” button at the bottom of the page.
- You will be prompted to review your EPBC application and pay an application fee.
Once you have paid the application fee, email nondegree.ok@ubc.ca if you want UBC to process it quicker. If not, it will take three to five business days for UBC to admit you.
