The Okanagan School of Education (OSE), located in Kelowna, BC, is part of the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC).  The School invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of Language Arts and Literacy Education at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor. The position is expected to start July 1, 2021.  UBC is one of the world’s leading universities, and is consistently ranked in the top 40. The University has two distinct campuses, one in Vancouver and one in Kelowna. UBC’s Okanagan campus, located in the city of Kelowna on unceded Syilx Okanagan territory, has strong undergraduate and graduate programs, with over 10,000 students in seven faculties.


Successful candidates will have a doctoral degree in a related discipline by the time of appointment; experience with teaching language arts in schools; a well-informed approach to K-12 education; a strong commitment to teacher education and the continuing professional development of teachers; a distinctive research record including high-quality publications in top tier journals in the discipline; and an ongoing program of research in literacy of sufficient quality to develop into an independent and innovative externally funded research program. A shared commitment to the priorities, goals, and objectives of the OSE Strategic Plan, investing in the ongoing development of a scholar-practitioner community is required.

The ideal candidate will have a strong record of (a) demonstrated excellence in Language Arts and Literacy scholarship, with a focus in areas such as foundations of teaching reading, teaching students with reading difficulties, assessment and evaluation of reading and language development, pedagogical strategies for teaching young children through adolescents from diverse linguistic and developmental backgrounds, multicultural children’s and young adult literature, digital literacies, and literacy across content areas (b) demonstrated excellence (Associate Professor) or potential for excellence (Assistant Professor) in advancing research and scholarship that contributes to Education priorities at the local, provincial, national, and/or international levels. Applicants should also have a record of high-quality publications in peer-reviewed and community-accessible journals, the potential to secure competitive external research funding, and the evidence of effective teaching.

We seek candidates with instructional expertise in K-12 education and evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level is required, as demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, teaching evaluations, strong letters of reference, and other materials submitted as part of the application. Preference will be given to applicants with familiarity with the BC educational context and public school teaching experience. In addition to English, proficiency in French and/or another language is desirable. Additionally, teaching and research capacities in one or more of the following areas: specific content/disciplinary expertise; Indigenous teacher education; research methodologies; teaching English as an additional language; social justice; Black studies, and gender/sexuality studies,  are considered an asset.

Candidates interested in an appointment at the Associate Professor rank will have a well-established portfolio of publications, teaching experience, and ongoing externally-funded research. Candidates interested in an appointment at the Assistant Professor rank will have started to publish their research in peer-reviewed journals and demonstrate strong potential for being successful in seeking externally-funded research. Priority will be given to applicants whose engagement and research aligns with UBC’s priorities of research excellence and community engagement, alongside the strategic plans of the School and the Faculty of Education.


The successful candidate is expected to (a) teach both advanced and introductory classes in undergraduate and graduate programs coordinated by the School, including courses in the teacher education program; (b) supervise graduate students enrolled in the School’s programs, and contribute grant support to doctoral student trainees; (c) be engaged in sustained and productive scholarly activity, (d) contribute to the scholarly community and service work of the School, the Faculty of Education, and the University community; and (e) participate in outreach within the broader educational community.

This is a tenure-stream position in the Professoriate stream and the successful candidate will be reviewed for reappointment, tenure, and promotion in subsequent years in accordance with the Collective Agreement. Starting salary is determined both by the candidate’s qualifications and experience and by their placement on the career progress scale within the Faculty of Education.
